Patent # 5719826 Calendaring System
Patent # 5793716 Date Conversions With A 360-Day Year Calendar
This invention was an adjunct to Patent # 5719826 and Patent # 5793716. It improved upon prior art by providing a real-time testing mechanism for programmers adding or making changes to date logic within the source code. Consequently, the newly created or replaced date logic could be compiled, linked and moved to production status with one step of the overall testing process already competed. Prior art did not allow programmers to pre-test date logic from within the source code editor, itself.
This Invention improved significantly upon prior art by correcting basic errors such as simple leap year determination. Plus, rules were defined to add rigor to prior technology (e.g., does date1 - date2 include date1, date2, neither or both). The invention further defined business capabilities that were not represented in prior technology in any robust way (such as support for variable "work weeks"). The invention became the foundation of a computer software product that enjoyed both technological and commercial success.
This invention also improved significantly upon prior art. The mathematical model in the invention was successfully and reliably capable of mapping two sets to each other, even if the sets had differing numbers of elements. This is known as a "many to many” relationship (i.e., there is not a simple “one to one” correspondence). Such "mappings" are notoriously difficult to create; a fact supported by the following two types of inconsistencies in the prior art. First if one "mapped" A to B and then B back again, it did not yield A. Second, it could be shown that A and A' are interchangeable (as are B and B'). Yet, if A was mapped to B, A' mapped to C (not B and not B'). The invention corrects those errors by providing a novel bi-directional table-driven search mechanism.
